Privacy

Sunrise is built for solo professionals who care about their data. Here is exactly what happens on your Mac or iPhone, and what doesn't.

Sunrise works without seeing your screen

Screen awareness is an optional power-up, never a requirement. The full product, check-ins, voice, goals, streaks, and recaps, works with zero permissions granted.

Nothing sensitive lives on your device

Sunrise’s voice and reasoning are included in your subscription and run on our secure infrastructure. There is nothing to set up and nothing sensitive stored on your machine, so there is nothing to leak.

App-usage tracking stays local

If you turn on app-usage context (Mac only), the breakdown of where your time went is computed and stored entirely on your Mac. It is never uploaded.

Screenshots are opt-in, used once, never stored

Screen awareness is off by default and only exists on Mac. If you turn it on, a screenshot is captured locally, sent once to inform that single check-in, and never written to disk or kept by us. You can turn it off in one click, anytime.

On iPhone, your voice never leaves as audio

Speech-to-text runs through Apple’s own Speech framework, on-device where supported, Apple’s recognition service otherwise. Sunrise never receives or uploads the audio itself, only the resulting text, exactly like typing.

What leaves your device

Everything optional is off until you turn it on. When something is sent, it is sent for a single check-in and is not used to train models.

Waitlist email (website only)
Stored so we can notify you once when builds are ready. Not shared. Unsubscribe by replying to that email.
Your goals and check-in replies
Sent to the model (via our secure proxy) to generate that turn. Not used to train models.
Voice, on iPhone
Transcribed to text by Apple’s Speech framework on the device; we never receive raw audio. Only the resulting text is sent, same as typing.
Voice, on Mac
Streamed to AssemblyAI for live transcription, then discarded. Audio is not stored by Sunrise or AssemblyAI beyond that transcription.
Goals, history & settings (if signed in)
Encrypted sync blob stored on Cloudflare KV so your data follows you across Mac and iPhone. Opt-in: only happens when you sign in with Google. Sign out to remove it.
Subscription status
Stripe (Mac/web) or Apple (iPhone) tells us only your plan and renewal date, never your card details. Apple’s in-app purchase is handled entirely by Apple; we receive a signed receipt, not payment information.
Check-in reminders (iPhone)
Scheduled and delivered entirely on-device via iOS local notifications. No push service, no third-party notification provider, nothing sent to us to schedule a reminder.
A screenshot (only if you enable it, Mac only)
Sent once for a single check-in, then discarded. Never stored.
Calendar events (only if you connect it)
Read locally; event titles/times are included as context for a check-in.
GitHub activity (only if you connect it)
Commit counts and repo names are read to ground progress nudges.
App-usage minutes (only if you enable it, Mac only)
Stays on your device. Aggregate minutes may inform a nudge; the raw log never leaves.

Retention

Without an account, everything stays on your device. Delete the app and it goes with it. If you sign in with Google, your goals, history, and settings are also stored in Cloudflare KV so they sync across your Mac and iPhone. You can sign out at any time to remove the server-side copy (on iPhone, signing out also clears that account's data from the device). Screenshots are never retained by us. We do not sell your data, and we do not train models on it.

Last updated July 2026. This page describes how Sunrise is built, on Mac and iPhone. As the product evolves we will keep it current, and we will never quietly widen what leaves your device.
